Description

These cracked sugar cookies are everything a cookie should be — soft, chewy, and full of buttery sweetness with a perfectly crackled top

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar (plus extra for rolling)

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.

  • Scoop out tablespoon-sized portions of dough and roll into balls. Roll each ball in granulated sugar.

  • Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart.

  • Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the edges are just golden and the tops are crackly.

  • Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For extra crackle, chill dough for 20 minutes before baking.

  • Can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days
